BONGAO, TAWI-TAWI – The Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU TCTO) has strengthened its global sustainability standing after earning strong placements across multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, reaffirming the University's commitment to advancing quality education, research, innovation, extension, and community engagement in support of sustainable development.
The annual THE Sustainability Impact Ratings recognize universities worldwide based on their contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals, measuring institutional performance across research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching. The ratings highlight higher education institutions that create meaningful and measurable impact in addressing global challenges while promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
Among its most notable achievements, MSU TCTO secured a place in the 101–200 global bracket under SDG 14: Life Below Water, ranking 1st among participating Philippine higher education institutions in the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings. The recognition highlights the University's sustained commitment to the sustainable use and conservation of marine and coastal resources through quality instruction, relevant research, responsive extension programs, and meaningful community engagement.
For a university located in the country’s southernmost island province, the achievement represents more than international recognition. It reflects how locally grounded initiatives can contribute to broader sustainability goals. By building on Tawi-Tawi’s rich marine ecosystems and working closely with coastal communities, MSU TCTO continues to demonstrate that impactful education and research can create lasting benefits for both people and the environment.
The latest recognition also marks another milestone in the University's continuing sustainability journey. In 2025, during its first participation in the THE Impact Rankings, MSU TCTO made history as the first higher education institution in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to be included in the global rankings, earning a 201–300 placement under SDG 14: Life Below Water. Just a year later, the University advanced into the 101–200 global bracket and emerged as the top-ranked Philippine higher education institution under the same SDG, reflecting the steady growth of its academic programs, research productivity, extension initiatives, and strategic partnerships.
Building on this remarkable performance, MSU TCTO also earned a 301–400 global ranking under SDG 4: Quality Education, placing 2nd among participating Philippine higher education institutions, recognizing its efforts to provide accessible, inclusive, and transformative education. The University likewise secured a 301–400 global placement under SDG 2: Zero Hunger, ranking 3rd in the Philippines, reflecting its continuing initiatives in food security, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, nutrition, and community livelihood development.
The University also achieved a 401–600 global placement under SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, ranking 4th in the Philippines, highlighting its initiatives that encourage environmental stewardship and sustainable resource management through instruction, research, and extension. Meanwhile, its growing network of local and international collaborations earned a 601–800 global placement under SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, likewise ranking 4th in the Philippines, underscoring the value of strategic partnerships in advancing research, innovation, and community development.
The University's commitment to sustainable and resilient communities was likewise recognized through its 601–800 global ranking under SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, placing 6th among participating Philippine higher education institutions, reflecting its continuing efforts to contribute to inclusive and sustainable communities. Further demonstrating its broader societal impact, MSU TCTO placed within the 301–400 global bracket under SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, ranking 7th among Philippine higher education institutions for its efforts in promoting inclusive governance, peacebuilding, and community empowerment within the Bangsamoro region.
In the overall Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, MSU TCTO was placed within the 1001–1500 global bracket, reflecting the University's sustained performance across its Sustainable Development Goal submissions and marking another significant milestone in its continuing journey toward international excellence.
