In its continuing pursuit of excellence in marine sustainability and environmental stewardship, the Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU TCTO) has achieved another milestone after emerging as the No. 1 participating higher education institution in the Philippines under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, securing a place in the 101–200 global bracket.
The University improved from its 201–300 global placement in 2025, further strengthening its position among higher education institutions making significant contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources.
The recognition represents more than international recognition. It affirms MSU TCTO’s enduring commitment to marine sustainability through quality instruction, impactful research, responsive extension programs, and meaningful community engagement, areas that have long defined the University’s identity and mission.
Located in the heart of the Sulu Archipelago, one of the world's richest centers of marine biodiversity, MSU TCTO has built its academic and research agenda around the unique ecological and cultural landscape of Tawi-Tawi. Its programs in fisheries, marine biology, environmental science, aquaculture, and the recently approved Bachelor of Science in Oceanography—the first undergraduate Oceanography program in the Philippines—continue to prepare future scientists, researchers, educators, and environmental leaders dedicated to protecting the country's marine ecosystems.
The latest distinction also marks a remarkable progression from the University's historic debut in the THE Impact Rankings. In 2025, MSU TCTO became the first higher education institution in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to enter the global rankings, earning a 201–300 placement under SDG 14: Life Below Water and bringing international recognition to the region's contributions to marine sustainability.
Just a year later, the University advanced into the 101–200 global bracket and emerged as the top participating Philippine higher education institution under SDG 14, reflecting the collective efforts of its faculty, researchers, students, staff, alumni, and partners in translating locally driven initiatives into globally recognized impact.
Beyond the classroom, MSU TCTO continues to strengthen marine conservation through interdisciplinary research, community-based extension programs, and strategic collaborations with government agencies, local government units, coastal communities, and national and international organizations. These initiatives support biodiversity conservation, sustainable fisheries management, coastal resource protection, climate resilience, and environmental education across Tawi-Tawi and neighboring island communities.
University Chancellor Prof. Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, PhD said the recognition affirms MSU TCTO's identity as an island university and its enduring commitment to advancing marine education, scientific innovation, environmental stewardship, and community engagement in support of sustainable development.
"Being recognized as the top participating Philippine higher education institution under SDG 14 is both an honor and a responsibility. As a university surrounded by some of the world's richest marine ecosystems, we are called not only to generate knowledge but also to protect, preserve, and sustain the resources that define our communities and way of life. This achievement reflects the collective dedication of our faculty, researchers, students, staff, alumni, partners, and coastal communities who continue to demonstrate that local action, grounded in science and collaboration, can create meaningful global impact. We remain committed to advancing marine education, research, innovation, and community engagement in pursuit of a more sustainable future."
The University's latest distinction demonstrates how institutions deeply rooted in local realities can make meaningful contributions to global sustainability. Its recognition as the top participating Philippine higher education institution under SDG 14 highlights the power of place-based education, scientific innovation, and community engagement in addressing some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges.
For MSU TCTO, the sea is more than a geographic setting—it is a living classroom, a source of livelihood, a foundation of culture, and a shared responsibility. As the No. 1 participating Philippine higher education institution under SDG 14, the University continues to demonstrate that world-class excellence can emerge from the nation's southernmost frontier. Guided by its mandate, inspired by its island communities, and driven by its commitment to marine sustainability, MSU TCTO carries the story of Tawi-Tawi beyond its shores, creating knowledge, inspiring innovation, and making a lasting impact for people, the planet, and future generations.
