We join our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters in mourning the death of Pope Francis who passed away at the age of 88 during Easter Monday.

As the first Jesuit and Latin American Bishop of Rome, he made a profound mark on history, reshaping the role of the papacy in the modern world. To many, he was a beacon of hope, championing social justice, climate action, and efforts to bridge the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

Pope Francis was also a steadfast advocate for peace in Gaza, reaching out to many Palestinians, through its Christian community, with nightly calls throughout the war. His compassion and unwavering solidarity brought comfort to those suffering, and his final public plea called for an immediate ceasefire and urgent humanitarian aid. The late pope even called for an investigation on the ongoing genocide in the war-stricken Gaza strip.

Pope Francis also visited the Philippines after the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda. He was met with jubilant cheers when he arrived in the country and also gave comfort to those who were severely affected by the typhoon in Tacloban, Leyte. He was called Lolo Kiko by the Filipino Catholics.

May the lessons and selfless acts of Pope Francis leave a legacy of kindness and justice in our hearts, and may he continue to inspire generations to come.

Requiescat in pace, Lolo Kiko.
